Asteroid 2012 DA14 makes its closest approach to Earth today
February 15, 2013 will go down in history as the day of a very active sky show. A large earth-buzzing asteroid, a meteorite air burst in Russia and the Bay Area fireball all made for an exciting astronomical day. The Discovery owned Science Channel will air a “A Russian Meteor Explosion Special” on Saturday at 8pm. Does Allstate cover Russian Meteor Mayhem?

Asteroid 2012 DA14 will be speeding past the planet Earth today, just inside the orbit of our band of geosynchronous satellites. But don’t worry. The flying space rock will pass 1000 miles from the closest satellite. No need to worry about losing your television or internet signals. You can follow the asteroid 2012 DA14 through live coverage from observatories around the world at NASA JPL’s Ustream channel and on Twitter or use #asteroid or #2012da14. Google had a cool animated Google Doodle commemorating the close flyby of Asteroid DA14 but pulled it after injuries were reported in the Russian meteor airburst explosion.
Check out this NASA animation:
And I’m sure you’ve all heard about the Russian meteor explosion that took place on the same day as the asteroid flyby. Here’s a few of the videos that local residents shot of the Russian meteor event in the town of Chelyabinsk:
And a video from a cab, must have looked like an ICBM coming in or something:
And RT has a video of the meteorite crater smashed into the frozen Lake Chebarkul:
Famed astrophysicist and one time Big Bang Theory guest Neil deGrasse Tyson went on the Today show to explain why the Russian Ural Mountains meteorite wasn’t picked up on radar.

And of course the Bay Area and Silicon Valley got a show today with a bright meteor #fireball captured on a dash camera and seen all over the area. The debris from the burning meteor was even picked up on NBC Bay Area’s weather radar when tweaked to show all objects.
The video below was shot on I-280 heading south at 7:44PM tonight.

Is Silicon Valley going to get snow on Friday morning?
Local weather services are predicting a small possibility of snow hitting the valley floor of Silicon Valley early on Friday morning.
The temperatures will be cold enough early Friday morning but the storm that will cause widespread rain in the Bay Area on Thursday will be waning by then. Only a slight chance of snow exists, but it just might happen. Watch for flakes!

If it does snow down here in Silicon Valley, don’t expect much accumulation. If you want to see any amount of real snow you’ll have to make the trek up to Tahoe:

Comcast Cable Box Slow?
Is your Comcast DVR/Cable Box slow to respond to inputs from your remote? Did you already try changing the batteries in your cable remote control?
Before you try getting a new cable box from your cable provider, try unplugging your cable box from the power to reboot the whole system. It will take a minute or so to reset, but once the cable box is back up, it should be more responsive.
The cable box is basically a computer that will need to be rebooted from time to time to clear out dead processes and refresh the system. It’s just like any other computer running an operating system, in this case the cable box is likely running some form of embedded linux, it can begin to suffer from slow response times after running non stop for a long period of time.

Your cable box can also become slow it is left on constantly and overheats. So be sure to switch it off occasionally and give it a break. Maybe go outside and take in some fresh air.
Happy Groundhog Day Silicon Valley!
Well, here we are again. February 2nd. Groundhog Day. With no sign of Bill Murray, Punxsutawney Phil climbed out of his burrow in the small Pennsylvania town and didn’t see his shadow. What does that mean? Spring is just around the corner for you winter weary residents of Silicon Valley. Tired of temperatures dipping below 40 degrees and cold winter rain? Soon the warm sun of spring will be greeting you. At least according to the great groundhog prognosticator of Punxsutawney Phil. Or you could just check out NBC Bay Area’s site for a more accurate prediction.
