Five Guys, famous for their burgers and fries, just opened a new location in San Jose, California at the Westlake Shopping Center on Prospect Avenue. This brings the total Silicon Valley area Five Guy’s locations to 9 with locations in Sunnyvale, Fremont, Belmont, Redwood City and multiple locations within the sprawling borders of the city of San Jose.

Check out the Five Guys store locator map here.

First rain of the season falls on Silicon Valley

A true sign winter is coming. The rain was heavy at times. Enough to wash the dust out of the air and make the roads slick.

Silicon Valley gas prices now higher than Hawaii

Gas at many stations in the Silicon Valley area will now set you back $4.75 or more a gallon. Regular unleaded gasoline is now more expensive than California’s number 2 diesel.

Due to refinery shortages on the west coast, supply of refined gasoline has been limited. Less supply means higher prices passed on to the consumer. One more high cost that exists in California that doesn’t exist in better managed states. How long can California citizens take these higher costs before they decide to move to Texas?

Silicon Valley Running Events

While all of the technology and digital widgets can be fun, sometimes you just have to get outside and do something physical, not virtual.

Here’s a list of a few local running events around Silicon Valley and the Bay Area:

In the heart of Silicon Valley in San Jose is the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose Half Marathon on October 7th 2012

The cassette tape medal turned out to be slightly smaller than the classic 80’s cassette tapes. Not quite a micro cassette, but since it’s solid metal it probably won’t play in your retro tape deck.

Further out in the mountain playground of Lake Tahoe is the Tough Mudder Nor-Cal.

Rain in Silicon Cali

I’m enjoying the sound of some much needed rain here in Silicon Cali. It’s been a very dry winter here. Most of the rain and snow has been stuck up north all winter long. Just in case you aren’t lucky enough to be here enjoying the rain in Silicon Cali, you can always see the current weather conditions in the valley with the weather widget on the right side of the page just below the tag cloud.

SiliconCali_Weather-Rain

Or if you are running Windows 7, you can use the Windows 7 Weather Widget or ‘Gadget’ as Microsoft calls them:

Windows-7-Weather-Widget-SiliconCali.com

To get the Windows 7 weather gadget, just right click on your screen background and choose the weather gadget. You’ll have to use the settings to set it up for the area of your choice. The two different weather widgets obviously don’t get their data from the same source, but they both offer a quick graphical update of weather conditions that is mostly accurate.

UFO or Lens Flare? You Decide!

Awesome view from the snowy summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii with a glowing orb floating among the high tech telescopes. What is that glowing orb floating around? A UFO? Or an artifact easily explained by the science of optics and light?

Squishable Androids Party on the Couch

Why yes, even giant Squishable Androids need a break from all that flying around the circuits of your smartphones and tablets.

SiliconCali.com will be taking a break this week. Many more posts coming that will cover Unix, Linux and Windows sysadmin as well as tech and travel. Have a good week!

Gas Prices in California

How high will they go? Gas prices in California are already near the 5 dollar mark in many places, and even exceeding 5 dollars a gallon at some LA gas stations.

Gas prices in California are only a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico away from 5 or 6 dollar a gallon gas. And even though the United States imports no oil from Iran, rumors of war push the whole oil market higher. Which ultimately pushes refined gasoline prices higher. Eventually gas prices in California may make the cost of a Tesla Model S compared to a gas powered four door sedan more attractive.
