GLIBCXX_3.4.9 not found in Red Hat/Fedora/CentOS linux

So you’re trying to run an application on Red Hat 5.x or CentOS or some other linux OS and are getting a library error like this:

[your_application]: /usr/bin/../lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by [your_application])

Basically the application you are trying to run was compiled using a different libstdc++ library than the one installed on your system. I’ve seen this problem when trying to run certain versions of Firefox and some versions of the Google Earth Client software on various linux systems.

You can fix this “`GLIBCXX_3.4.9′ not found” error by installing the library that the application is looking for directly in its working directory.

Here are the steps I took to fix the problem on one particular linux OS install, your results may vary depending on the library your application is looking for and the configuration of your system.

1. Download (burn to CD if you are working on a standalone system) the Fedora 9 package of libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm from the following link:

http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/i386/os/Packages/libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm

2. Copy the package file from the CD to your application working directory:

cp /media/libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm [your_application_working_directory]

3. Unpack the package in the directory where your application is installed:

[your_application_working_directory]$ rpm2cpio libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm | cpio -i --make-directories

4. Move the library and its link so that it resides directly in your application working directory:

[your_application_working_directory]$ mv usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6* .

[NOTE: this path is RELATIVE — it has no leading slash.]

5. Run your application and test:

./your_application

Good luck and if you can’t find the specific library you need try checking the Fedora package repository here for i386 packages:

Harvest Moon Rising Saturday Night

Don’t miss the bright light from the Harvest Moon this Saturday night. You should be able to see it rising in the east as darkness falls in the valley. Just tear your eyes away from the glow of your smartphone for a bit and witness the natural glow of the full moon. In the age before electric lights and glowing digital devices this was the only way to get work done at night. The harvest moon will be full at 8:19 PM Saturday night.

Pics coming soon! from Saturday night, just after 8 PM Cali time:

NorCal Tough Mudder Weekend in Tahoe

For all those that completed the Tough Mudder course this weekend, congratulations! You have earned the right to wear your bright orange headband, the Tough Mudder finisher “medal”. Just like in the ancient Olympics of Greece, there is no actual metal finisher medal for this obstacle course run. Your badges of honor are your hard earned scrapes and bruises and the pride of knowing that you helped your fellow mudders over the obstacles as they helped you over the course. And in place of the olive branch of ancient times you get a bright orange Tough Mudder Under Armour headband as your prize.

Under Armour is a big sponsor for Tough Mudder. Their Tough Mudder related goodies can be found on their site here.

While you don’t have to donate your shoes after you tough it out through the muddy course of Tough Mudder, many take the opportunity to offload their mud soaked footwear before heading home.

You can donate your Tough Mudder mud soaked shoes at the end of the course. They are washed and donated to charity.

If you were lucky enough to get any shots from the official photographers, they only found  me for 2 pictures on the course.

Shiver me timbers! It’s talk like a pirate day!

Arrghh! I nearly forgot this year!

Oracle’s legal team forces wesunsolve.net to shutdown

Another useful tool for Solaris Unix system administrators was crushed under the weight of Oracle. This tool was highly useful for digging through all of the  read me files to determine which patch might solve your problem and finding patch dependencies.

The site, wesunsolve.net, was regularly updated and linked to Oracles support page for the actual download of patches.

Yes, the site did copy Sun/Oracle read me files and patch information and put it in a more navigable format, but did not distribute any Sun/Oracle binaries. You still had to have an active support account with Oracle to download Solaris patches. But the company should have recognized that this was a tool that supported the Solaris community and made managing some aging Solaris machines a little easier. But moves like this are part of the reason those Solaris machines are aging and will be replaced by Linux machines.

Amazon begins collecting sales tax in California

On September 15th, California won another battle to do with your money as the state pleases. All Amazon.com orders being shipped to California will collect sales tax.

The State Government of California should remember that Silicon Valley Innovation is still going on despite the horrible business environment that California presents. If this practice of endless taxation keeps up, there will be no more innovation occurring in the state of California.

If the state continues in this direction towards higher and higher taxes collected from those that do business here, eventually there will only be empty decaying business offices and National Parks full of homeless people left to occupy California.
